The 1st Amendment guarantees that those who signed a petition asking for their state to be allowed to secede cannot be punished by the government through criminal or civil means for expressing their ignorant opinions and petty desires. However, the 1st Amendment does not prohibit public ridicule of them for wearing their patriotism on their sleeve and their utter ignorance of history and civics.
Please, Obama administration, verbally address, or at a minimum release a statement scolding them for standing by The United States of America only when the country is headed in a direction they agree with and attempting to abandon the nation because the person they wanted as president did not win. And please, remind them of the legality and history of secession.
