Mutagenesis is the "enhanced" practice of scrambling the genes of a plant to achieve certain traits. Mutagenesis can be achieved through exposing the seed of a plant to toxic chemicals or gamma rays, x-rays, and other radiation that would NOT BE POSSIBLE UNDER NATURAL CONDITIONS. For example: Clearfield Wheat was exposed to sodium azide (NaN3) a highly toxic chemical for the sole purpose of selling BASF's pesticide Beyond. Under the current definition this product can be called organic: it is not.
Mutagenesis through the risky practice of chemical and radiation mutagens, should be EXCLUDED from the definition of "traditional breeding practice" and should NOT be allowed to be labeled "organic". Mutagenesis should be included in the definition of a practice of Genetic Modification.
