Mass transit systems are increasingly treating bicycles as carry-on baggage and many have special provisions to make transporting them easy. Amtrak lags behind in this respect due to a requirement that the bicycle be boxed and travel aboard a baggage car. Bicycles weigh less than half of the maximum weight of a carry-on bag and can easily fit in areas designated for slightly over-sized or in the overhead storage areas because wheels can be easily and safely removed. Amtrak goes to many rural areas where adventure cyclists like to start out or end their trip. Furthermore, Amtrak could benefit from additional revenue that bicycle tourists would bring because bicycle touring is seeing a large resurgence. On a final note, this encourages Americans to lead healthier lifestyles.
