Medical professionals who volunteer their time in Ebola-stricken countries are critical to stopping the spread of Ebola. Requiring them to submit to an enforced 21-day quarantine upon their return will prevent most from being able to volunteer; it turns a three-week volunteer commitment into a six-week volunteer+quarantine commitment. This is counterproductive to stopping the spread of Ebola. Instead require them to self-monitor and report daily the emergence of any early symptoms such as an elevated temperature or fatigue. As medical professionals who have had experience dealing with Ebola, they have the strongest motivation to comply in monitoring their own status and reporting any changes swiftly to prevent infecting others.
