Earlier this month, a U.S. satellite known as F17, which was primarily used for meteorological measurements, experienced operational failures that compromised the integrity of its data.
This series of satellites contain instruments known as a passive microwave sensors, which are particularly important for measuring the extent of sea ice, a critical indicator of climate change.
Scientists currently have a 40 year uninterrupted record of sea ice area provided by F17 and its predecessors. The record is much more valuable if it is continuous, and the next satellite needs to be launched urgently.
Named F20, it is already built, and could be launched at any time. We call upon the government to ensure that this important asset is launched as soon as possible.
