Our fighting men and women suffer from PTSD at a rate of double the general populous. There are numerous accounts of the failings of the DoD and VA in treating these brave veterans. This is an embarrassment to our great nation and must be rectified. There have been many media reports on the subject and nothing seems to improve. In 2012, a study funded by the DoD run by the National Academy of Sciences was conducted. Among other conclusions, the study found that 1) the VA and DoD does not adequately track incidents of PTSD 2) The correct methods are not in use to correctly diagnose PTSD and other mental illnesses 3) there are barriers to veterans seeking treatment for mental illnesses such as PTSD.
