My petition requests that the IRS make available quality tax preparation software free of charge to its citizens. If such a plan were implemented it would benefit both our government and it's citizens. The benefits for our government would be a higher rate of compliance, accuracy of the filed returns and significant budget savings in the form of significantly reduced paper shuffling. The main benefit to taxpayers would be the cost savings. According to NTIA, as of October 2012, 72.4 percent of American households (88 million households) have high-speed Internet at home. I think that it is safe to assume that well over 50% of taxpayers qualify to use 1040EZ.
As for where this free and accurate software will come from I recommend soliciting bids from the existing providers of this software.
