Every night, the average American student is faced with several hours of assigned school work to do at home. The purpose of homework is allegedly to expand upon topics discussed in class. However, this is often not the case. Many teachers use homework as a punishment, or require students to complete homework without knowledge related to the topic. The time that homework requires takes away from social aspects of adolescence, as well as study time, and sometimes meals or sleep. An appropriate alternative would be that students should be offered study materials, that wouldn't be graded, but would help students to understand the topics taught in class.
