The electoral college is an unfair system of electing the president of the United States. Lets say a state like California goes to Obama or some other candidate with 60% of the vote. That means that all 55 votes go to that candidate, deeming 40% of the state irrelevant. The voice of those 40% go unheard. Popular sovereignty would ensure that the voice of each and every citizen is herd.
The electoral college makes citizens unequal. A vote in Ohio is worth more than in one of Massachusetts or Texas. Thus people in battleground states a petitioned too, and it is their goals that become part of the platform of the candidate, not that of the whole country. Popular vote makes all citizens equal, a benchmark of the United States that all people are created equal.
