The Popular Vote to pick the next President of the U.S. not the Electoral College

The Electoral College was created to give states an equal voice in voting for President, this was fine centuries ago when this was a young country and our technology was paper and quill pen and our mode of transportation was still horse back riding. But this is the 21st century, we have cars that run on electricity instead of gas and computers that can run on 2 operating systems, if someone has the knowledge. So why aren't we using the technology we have today to connect our country so our next President is picked by the popular vote not the Electoral College? The Electoral College was needed centuries ago but we've grown as a country (as people & government) and this is a good way to show we can represent ourselves in making our own decisions of who we want as President.
