Chips, a war dog in World War II, rushed a pillbox on a Sicilian beach after breaking from his handler. Inside were four Italian machine-gun operators, who had the rest of Chips' unit, including his handler, pinned down. Despite suffering a scalp wound and powder burns, Chips forced the machine-gunners to surrender to American servicemen. In similar incidents, Chips forced the surrender of an additional ten Italian soldiers on that day.
Chips was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, and Purple Heart, but due to Army regulations these medals were later revoked.
Today, war dogs are given a rank higher than that of their handler. If war dogs can hold a rank, there is no reason their valor should not be recognized with awards.
