U.S. Navy Messman Third Class Doris Miller is most notably regarded for his bravery during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was the first African American to be awarded the Navy Cross. Upon the initial attack Miller reported to his battle station only to find out it had been destroyed. He instead reported to "Times Square" where he made himself available for other duty. Lt. Commander Johnson ordered Miller to accompany him to the ships bridge to help assist in the moving of the ship's Captain Bennion who had been mortally wounded. Lt. White ordered Miller to help in the loading of .50 caliber anti-aircraft machine guns. Miller had no training on the weapon but was instructed what to do. Miller hopped on the machine gun and began firing at Japanese aircraft until he ran out of ammo.
