In 1913, Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight boxing champion, was jailed and sentenced to prison for his romantic relationships with white women under the Mann Act. Jack Johnson "flouted conventions regarding the social and economic "place" of blacks in American society and was jailed for it. As a black man, he broke a powerful taboo in consorting with white women, and would constantly and arrogantly verbally taunt men (both white and black) inside and outside the ring." Jack Johnson's conviction was truly a miscarriage of justice.
