practice daily meditation at the start of every legislative meeting.

Created by D.C. on February 19, 2013

To assist in Congress working together, I propose daily meditation.

There are many benefits to mindfulness meditation. It works by enabling a person to have better control over brain processing. Research has also shown that mindfulness meditation decreases the density of the grey matter in the brain's amygdala, a brain region known for its role in stress.

Meditators shift their brain activity to different areas of the cortex - brain waves in the stress-prone right frontal cortex move to the calmer left frontal cortex. This mental shift decreases the negative effects of stress, mild depression and anxiety. There is also less activity in the amygdala, where the brain processes fear.

The practice brings about dramatic effects in as little as a 10-minute session.
