prescriptions like insulin for permanent conditions cause problems because they keep expiring.

Created by S.L. on January 23, 2015

Over the past few years I’ve been diagnosed with 4 autoimmune conditions:
Type 1 Diabetes
Hypothyroidism
Addison’s disease
B12 deficiency
All are permanent conditions that need permanent prescriptions. All of the medications, from insulin to injectable vitamin B12 expire after 1 year and must be re-issued by a doctor. The process takes a work day or two, so if you run out of insulin on a Friday and realize your prescription expired a week ago, you’re in huge trouble. Similarly, pharmacies only allow you to transfer one refill of medication across state lines, effectively canceling it. I go to college out of state and split my time across three states. Prescriptions for chronic conditions should remain valid indefinitely, excluding obvious circumstances of controlled substances etc..
