Renee Lamaire, a Belgian Nurse, provided outstanding care to American soldiers during the Battle of the Bulge. Her actions were well-documented. She was killed in an air bombing of the hospital facilities on December 24, 1944. Her life and death should be honored, much in the same way many Europeans continue to honor our war dead buried in their cemeteries to this day. Others have been awarded the Medal of Freedom for actions that in no way cost them anything; this woman gave her life while trying to rescue a wounded American soldier from the bombed hospital, in the highest traditions of the healthcare field. Her actions reflect great credit on the Kingdom of Belgium, Her citizens, and the Nursing profession.
