We strongly reject the President’s FY15 budget proposal for the Foster Grandparent Program. The new model will result in a huge reduction in the number of service hours FGP volunteers can provide to hundreds of thousands at-risk children across our country.
Instead increasing the FGP stipend from $2.65 to $3.00 an hour per the Serve America Act, this budget proposal replaces FGP the hourly stipend with an annual living allowance, harshly reducing the service hours volunteers can provide and undermining one of the core tenets, enabling low-income seniors to serve their communities. The budget allocated for new members is $92,806,000, but Congress enacted a budget of $107,702,000 for FGP in FY14.
Frankly, it is sad that we must face this so near the 50th anniversary of the national FGP.
