The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) granted permission to Spectra Energy to build a new 42-inch, high-pressure, fracked gas pipeline under the Hudson River, next to the aging and failing Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, only 35 miles from New York City. This new Algonquin Incremental Market (AIM) pipeline poses an unacceptable risk to the lives and property of more than 20 million people living and working within the 50-mile impact and evacuation radius of the plant, including the New York City metropolitan area. No comprehensive, independent risk assessment was conducted despite numerous requests from safety experts, elected officials, and the public. President Obama must intercede with FERC to have it halt construction and immediately rescind its approval of the project.
