In 2010, Marissa Alexander, a 31-year-old mother was sentenced to 20 years in prison in the state of Florida for shooting a wall to scare off her husband she felt was threatening her.
Claiming self-defense and invoking Florida's "stand your ground" law, her pleas were rejected, a jury found her guilty as charged: aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, because she fired a gun committing a felony, Florida's mandatory-minimum gun law dictated the 20-year sentence.
In light of the recent George Zimmerman case, the 20 year sentence brought against Marissa Alexander would appear both harsh and hypocritical. No one died because of Marissa Alexander’s act and she too claimed self defense.
We, the signers of this petition, urge that she be absolved through presidential pardon.
