The 1st section of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) reads “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” It is that simple. Not women over men; not men over women; just plain equality. It is time we had a constitution that reflects our Nation's value on equality. Ask Congress to extend the deadline for the ERA so 3 more States can ratify.
Congress first extended the ratification process to 1982, but since the 3 States needed seemed unlikely in 1983, Congress did not extend again. But when the 1789 "Madison Amendment" finally ratified in 1992, the 27th Amendment passed 203 years after it had been proposed. This long process opened discussion that Congress should open the ERA ratification process again.
