Alexander Aan was imprissioned for 2&1/2 years under Article 28 (2) of the ITE Law for posting materials promoting religious debate on Facebook.
Indonesia was heavily criticized for its lack commitment in protecting religious minority groups in the UN. Indonesia accepted recommendations given by New Zealand and Norway to revise and repeal laws and policies discriminatory towards religious minority groups. However no measures have taken and discrimination continues. The US Government should make finacial aid and military aid depended on Jakarta releasing Alexander Aan and all other people in prison simply because they express non-violent religious belief not held by the Muslim majority. Further, the Indonesian government must bring to trial members of the mob that beat Mr. Aan.
