The patent system, at least in regards to the tech industry, allows for corporations that exist only to extract money through licensing fees. This needs to be stopped, as it's hampering innovation and slowing the already-burdened legal system.
Patents should only be issued for innovative ideas that can be demonstrated as a significant leap in technology. Patents with application in rapidly changing industries should also expire sooner than patents in slow-moving industries. The pharmaceutical industry needs patents to be profitable, but patents in the tech industry are being abused. This needs to change.
