Pressure Congress to incentivize businesses to make more food donations through increasing charitable tax deductions

Created by S.G. on April 20, 2013

We petition President Obama to pressure Congress to incentivize restaurants, grocery stores, and food based corporations to maximize their donations of surplus foodstuffs to shelters and soup kitchens by increasing charitable tax returns. America wastes $165 billion of wasted food per year. Meanwhile, many US residents are starving. Nationwide, 14.5% of homes are food insecure. Businesses such as Panera have already implemented programs that give leftover goods to impoverished and homeless people. Why shouldn’t every food business do this? It’s clear that at the end of the day, if the food will simply be thrown away. We propose that Congress should put a tax incentive into place rewarding businesses that reduce their food waste while feeding those who need the food most.
