The Hominid Behavior Research Project calls on the Obama Administration to put diplomatic pressure on the Indonesian Government to halt the destruction of the Tripa forest in Aceh province, which is devastating local wildlife, including the highly endangered Sumatran orangutan. It is estimated that close to half of all orangutans living in the Tripa forest have been lost to fires that continue to rage as palm oil companies drain the swamp to increase production. Sumatran orangutans are listed as critically endangered by the IUCN and it is estimated that if the fires and habitat destruction in the Tripa forest are not halted, they will be locally extinct before the end of 2012. The Obama Administration can help stop this environmental disaster through diplomatic channels.
