Several states employ abstinence only education which can be detrimental to the health and safety of many. Currently, states employing abstinence only education have some of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the country. Even more detrimental to public health, the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted illnesses are most prevalent in these populations. In previous fiscal years, almost $40 million were allotted to abstinence only education. This upcoming fiscal years budget does not have any federal allotment for this education, so states with abstinence only education need to be pressured into reform to allow for sexual health funding to be distributed and used to educate the populace.
