Americans are divided about abortion - A majority favor legalized abortion in hard cases: rape, incest & threat to the mothers life (less than an estimated 10% of all abortions) Very few support an extreme position for any reason at any time, especially the third trimester.
Currently, based on the Supreme Court decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, abortion is legal for any reason up until the second a child is born.
Although some progress was made at state level on issues like parental notification, the only laws passed to date that actually limit abortion by restricting it to the first 20 weeks of pregnancy are not yet upheld by the Supreme Court.
