China has blatantly and vigorously sponsored hacking of US military contractors in an attempt to gain military technology and trade secrets. In the past year, the Chinese government has been able to steal weapons designs for the Aegis ballistic missle defense system, the V-22 Osprey, the Black Hawk Helicopter, the F/A-18 fighter jet, and the F-35 fighter. Some conjecture that theft of US technology has led to rapid development of China's own J-20 fighter. Even with several known cases of successful data theft, the US government has made no attempt to punish the Chinese government for its dangerous and malicious activities beyond a simple chastisement from the white house. The US government must enact legitimate economic or political punishment to prevent further military data theft.
