Prevent closure of safe nuclear power plants until we eliminate all carbon dioxide-emitting sources of energy from use

Forced closures of safe nuclear power plants should not be permitted until we have eliminated all carbon dioxide-emitting sources of energy entirely. As a country, we cannot afford to eliminate viable sources of clean energy from our power supplies because of the dire threat of climate change, which poses more severe risks to us (and the world as a whole) than those posed by existing nuclear power plants. Acknowledging that our aging nuclear power plants and the older technologies employed are not as safe as we would like, we should make every effort to improve and implement safer, non-proliferation prone and more cost-effective new designs as quickly as possible both nationally and internationally, with the longer-term goal of transitioning to all renewable energy as soon as feasible.
