The purpose of this petition is to challenge the government to institute a federal requirement limiting the amount of time potential employers can go back on a candidates background check. A large percentage of potential employees are being discriminated against due to mistakes that they have made many years ago. This is harmful to local communities and the larger state and federal economies by taking away potential tax revenue and encouraging ex-cons to reoffend in order to survive. Employers should not be allowed to discriminate on the basis of offenses that occured many years in the past; roughly 7 - 10 years.
