Recent news articles have brought to light a disturbing new trend where employers are requiring prospective employees to provide access to their social network pages (see http://goo.gl/99Vtu). This practice ranges from requiring interviewees to friend a HR rep, to actually handing over usernames and passwords to the company. Not only is this practice a threat to employee privacy, requiring people to hand over sensitive information to a third party is irresponsible in today’s digital age. Job seekers already face tremendous difficulties securing employment, they don’t need the added burden of having to compromise their private lives.
This petition simply asks that President Obama and his administration pursuit legislation to make such practices illegal.
