The US government should oppose all efforts to produce genetically modified human beings. The FDA is holding meetings to discuss the scientific aspects of what it terms mitochondrial manipulation technologies. These techniques would change every cell in the bodies of children born as a result of this procedure and these alterations would be passed down to future generations. In essence these new human beings would carry the genetic material from three or more people - the mother; the father; and the mitochondrial DNA donor(s). Most of us would agree that using genetic engineering to treat medical conditions in people is reasonable. What is not reasonable is manipulating the genetic traits of future human beings. The ethics and social aspects are ignored.
