Since 2000 the Postal Service has had to increase rates on standard letters nine times. With a decline in mail volumes, USPS has attempted to address its financial woes by cutting delivery only to be blocked by congressional action that resulted in a massive layoff.
Like all struggling businesses, now is the time for the USPS to be allowed to innovate and provide basic non-bank, financial services to the public. The USPS Inspector General recently endorsed such an initiative in a white paper that received coverage in The New Republic (http://www.newrepublic.com/article/116374/postal-service-banking-how-usp...)
Give USPS the tools it need to remain self-sufficient while expanding affordable financial services to the unbanked.
