A warning label should be required on the packages of all button batteries informing consumers that children and pets could be seriously burned or die if batteries are swallowed or lodged in the ears or nose, and emergency treatment should be sought immediately. Also, remotes and other products containing button batteries should contain covers with screws to prevent them from accidently being removed or falling out.
This law is necessary due to the increase of button batteries in American households, and lack of consumer awareness as to their danger. Ingestion of batteries have caused fatalities in over 16 children and injury, sometimes permanent, to thousands. Plus, it increases the victim's chances of esophageal cancer in the long term, and are responsible for over 66,000 ER visits.
