As we see tragedies such as mass shootings, stabbings and bombings becoming more common in the news media, one has to ask if the national coverage that individuals who commit these horrible crimes receive has encouraged people to achieve their "15 minutes of fame" by replicating these acts.
Images of suspects displayed on every television station and newspaper, their names known by every citizen, and their life story told through every outlet only prompts others to copy these acts for recognition.
We ask for the creation of regulations that prevent major news media outlets from overly publicizing and glorifying individuals who commit mass crimes. We believe that this would decrease the incentive to achieve celebrity status through violence and murder.
