Lodsys is a company of lawyers that sue small businesses for using common technologies such as 'in-app purchases' used by Apple smart devices. Lodsys, and other companies like them, sue companies in order to obtain a settlement before any legal proceedings. Most small business can not afford even a simple legal case. Companies like Lodsys rely on this fact and make it more affordable for the business owner to settle than to go to court. This is tantamount to extortion. In most cases, companies such as Lodsys use their patents for the sole purposes of suing other companies, i.e., they do not own any technology properties. They use their legal muscle to push around small business owners who are not committing any crimes.
