The US Federal Government has a plan: to kill over 3,600 Barred Owls- for no reason other than moving into another owl's territory. The Barred Owl is slightly larger and more aggressive than it's look-alike, the Spotted Owl, whose numbers have been steadily declining since the 1970's due to destruction of their natural habitats. Barred owls are moving west because of destruction of their habitats, also.
This plan is counter productive. Why kill one to save the other? Why not capture-and-release into another area? Why not build nesting boxes for the Spotted Owl? How about cutting back on the destruction of both their habitats? Barred owls mate for life. It seems senseless to murder owls to save other owls, especially when there are much better alternatives.
