Shell Oil has failed to prove that they can begin exploratory drilling in the Arctic in a safe manner. They admit that vessels fail to meet mandated air quality levels standards. Also, last week one of their ships destined for the Arctic slipped its moorings, drifting out of control to the Alaskan shoreline.
In addition, technology for detecting and tracking spilled oil in the Arctic is still in its early stages. Shell has decided to rely on a dachshund and two border collies to track leaking oil deep under the Arctic ice pack. Unbelievably, the company claims that tests they conducted show that dogs are the best technology available to detect oil spills beneath snow and ice.
Shell cannot be relied on to conduct drilling in a safe manner and should not be allowed to proceed.
