The United States has worked hard to develop an information society, yet not everyone can participate.
Too many Americans do not have access to broadband, and those that do must overpay for access provided by deceptive and monopolistic practices of cable corporations. Consumers pay through the nose for service, seeing their bills double or triple after their "introductory rate" ends.
President Obama should declare that broadband access is a basic human right. This would ensure that every citizen, rich and poor, urban and rural, has equal access to our information society. It would also protect Americans from the unfair practices of Comcast, Time Warner, and other cable monopolies.
High-speed Internet access is a basic human right that should not be entrusted to monopolies.
