Known by the honorary title "America's Best Rock and Roll Band", R.E.M. has sold over 85 million records and were one of the most iconic alternative rock bands in the world. Outside of music, R.E.M. used their position as rock stars to advocate for environmental and humanitarian causes. Recognizing the important place R.E.M. has in American musical and cultural history, April 5th should be designated as "R.E.M. Day", to celebrate the day the band played its first show in Athens, Georgia in 1980.
