Requesting Congress to proclaim the Hawaiian island of Kahoolawe as a federally recognized Native Hawaiian Nation. Requesting Kahoolawe to be federally recognized as a semi-autonomous government in the same vein as other Native American groups such as the Navajo Nation in Arizona. The Hawaiian monarchy was illegally overthrown in 1893 by a group of United States businessmen and military. Native Hawaiian land and natural resources were stolen and commercialized for decades after, stripping Hawaiian heritage, culture, and language. Kaho'olawe is one small island that is important in Native Hawaiian traditions and has been used by the U.S. military for bombing campaigns - recognizing this sacred island would give Native Hawaiians autonomy for how to use their lands and teach future Hawaiians.
