Slavery is a black eye in the history of our country. We must never forget this grave injustice and we should honor those who fought to abolish the practice. We should celebrate everyone - politicians, community leaders, soldiers, preachers, and even those enslaved - who had the courage to take a stand and sacrifice, even to the point of death, for the freedom of every American. We should honor those who stand for civil rights everywhere, but we should especially take pause and remember the emancipation and the sacrifices made by those Americans that stood for ending slavery. Make it a holiday, and honor one such American every year on that date to ensure the education of all of sacrifices made.
