Lake Okeechobee in Florida, is one of this nation’s treasures, utilized for everything from fishing, to boating, to agriculture. However, two major problems have occurred.
1. The Herbert Hoover Dike at the Lake is in disarray. Congress has authorized repairs, but will take 20 years to complete. Water has been released into the connected Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie Rivers. These releases have caused major environmental and economic impacts.
2.Years of drainage into the lake, has caused pollution.
The Federal Government can rebuild the dike, and clean out the pollution. In conjunction with HB4793 (buy lands south of the lake) this proclamation helps solve the crisis. Immediate action should be taken to preserve human life, the ecosystem and economic losses that will continue.
