To Proclaim November 12 to December 12 as National Garifuna Settlement, Education and Awareness Month

Garifuna Settlement is America's celebration of the Garifuna Immigrant community's culture, history and dance. An event that began in the city of Los Angeles in the 1960's, Garifuna Settlement today has been proclaimed in cities and states across the nation that includes: New York, Louisiana, Illinois, California, Massachusetts, Texas, Georgia, Florida and Michigan.

Garifuna Settlement pays tribute to the arrival and settlement of the Garifuna people in Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua and the United States starting in 1802.

The proclamation of this important month of celebration, awareness and education, will honor the contributions of the Garifuna American immigrant group to the diversity, development, economic, security of our nation.
