The second week of March is National Sleep Awareness Week. Since 2008 the Narcolepsy Network has observed the second Saturday of March as a Narcolepsy Awareness day. Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological (and possibly autoimmune) disorder caused by the brain’s inability to regulate sleep-wake cycles and it affects an estimated 1 in every 2,000 Americans. Misrepresented, under-recognized, and under-diagnosed, Narcolepsy affects people of all ages, causing other health complications and impacting their lives socially and emotionally. This administration has been active in getting people engaged in their health again. Proclaiming National Narcolepsy Awareness Day will inform Americans of the importance of healthy sleep habits and the negative impact sleep deprivation has on your whole health.
