It has come to my recent attention with the minting of the modern commemorative silver dollar of 2014, which celebrates the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that the United States mint has yet to produce a coin that commemorates the life of William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, more commonly known as W.E.B. Du Bois.
Du Bois was born on February 23rd of 1868 and in 2018, the U.S. should honor his 150th anniversary of birth by minting a silver dollar in his name and honor. These are just a few of the many reasons why Du Bois deserves to be in celebrated in 2018’s U.S. Modern Commemorative Coin Program:
•First African-American to earn a doctorate degree (Harvard).
•The use of the Talented Tenth (education)
•The Niagara Movement which fostered the NAACP in 1909.
•Booker T. Washington has two coins.
