Although marijuana is a federally illegal Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, individual states have been granted the right to allow the use of marijuana under certain medical conditions. The regulation and validity of supposed medical conditions are concerning and need to be readdressed, considering the potential hazards, abuse, and health effects of the drug.
The recent and ongoing federal and state-wide regulation of the drug has increasingly brought prevalence to universities and academic institutions. Based on the known harmful effects from the both the legal and illegal use of marijuana, its use on university grounds is unacceptable. It brings a harmful atmosphere to the students, faculty, environment, and its guests. Reform needs to happen and be enforced.
