This petition is important to protect the most financially vulnerable, such as students and those with the least amount of funds in their bank account from paying unreasonable fees for minor overdraft amounts. The charge could be denied instead, or at very least be limited to the amount of the actual overdraft amount. Currently, the student who overdrafts by $1.00 for a $1.50 cup of coffee, is penalized with a $40. fee, but not notified that he has over-drafted his account. An hour later he buys a candy bar for $1.25 and gets charged another $40. This practice by the banks should be illegal.
