Prohibit banks from requiring credit checks to open accounts

Created by C.B. on December 04, 2012

Banks and credit unions are increasingly requiring a credit check before customers can open an account. This discriminates against people who are unemployed and have been unable to find a job through no fault of their own. Often the unemployed are eventually unable to pay their debts and this ruins their credit rating. When they finally are able to open a bank account after finding a job they are then unable to because their credit rating is poor. We call on President Obama to issue an executive order to prohibit this practice or encourage Congress to pass a law.
