We insist that political party national conventions no longer be funded with taxpayer money.
In 2012, while the national debt topped 15 trillion, tax payers funneled a total of 36 million into party conventions. These parties were to already receive private union and corporate funding (Murse).
Congress even paid 100 million dollars to bolster security for the two parties’ conventions. With these federal funds and the 36 million already paid directly to the parties, taxpayers contributed 136 million dollars to an event Senator Tom Coburn calls “summertime parties” (qtd. in Murse). Indeed, taxpayer money should not contribute to an event that showcases celebrity talent over political agenda. This does not reflect serious government leadership or wisdom in a time of debt.
