Attempts have been made to promote government payments to certain religious groups to pay for storm damage. The 1st Amendment says that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion", this part of the Bill of Rights is known as the separation of church and state. It protects the government from religious interference and the church from government interference. This is violation of the 1st Amendment.
Payments to a religious institution would be a defacto preference since an equal amount could not be given to every other sect that operates in this country. The separation of church and state has protected us from religious intervention since the founding fathers. Houses of worship can & must have their congregants pay for their needs and or purchase insurance as others
